Adobe is clear that they're retiring PageMaker and won't be releasing a Vista-compatible version. They ALSO say that PageMaker won't install or run on Vista. This last is not quite true. I have PM 7.0 on Vista and have encountered very few issues.The only serious problem so far is that the Build Booklet plug-in simply will not run.Because I still need PageMaker for a specific assignment, and because my new computer has Vista, I'd like to know what features/plug-ins/etc.

You dont have to learn any new skills but will / could mave major problems installing or getting PM to run properly. Remember, PageMaker was never designed to work with Vista and ver 7 was merely a fix to keep PageMaker XP compliant. Pagemaker 7 is 99% the same as ver 6.5. If using PageMaker, then then keep it on Windows XP, not Vista.If spending time and money moving over to Vista, it makes sense to use InDesign CS3 OR equivalent as long as it is Vista comliant.

I began Graphic Design (and Pagemaker) when it was still running in windows 286, a long while ago. I have worked with all versions, up to 6.75, which runs smoothly in XP! (No complaits). I migrated to Indesign in version CS2. Why Pagemaker? Lightweight, light lo load, smooth and easy to run for text based publications (attorney books and other legal stuff).
Why InDesign? Heavy Duty, strong support for high volume, graphics and major tweaks in publications.
(magazines, rich in media and with tons of images, transparencies and silhouettes). From my Point of View, Adobe may resucite Pagemaker as an InDesign 'Light' or 'InDesign Express' to satisfy the low level publications, and keep the InDesign CS3 for the high-end rich media publications. I've never understood the calls for an InDesign 'light' (or any other cut-down version of an app). If Indesign has features you don't need, then just don't use them. If all you want to do is fairly simple text typesetting, then ID has a much better feature set than PM in this regard, so why would you want to use an inferior product? The only reason that makes any sense to me at all is that PM runs on lower-specced systems than ID, but RAM and memory are cheap these days, so I don't see that as a particularly strong reason to keep PM going.Fri, 31 Dec 2010 06:26:01 GMTPage 1 of 1 11 post.
